Mazda working on Chevrolet Volt competitor

Mazda engineers are working on a rival to the Chevrolet Volt. According to senior sources, Mazda is working on a car which uses a petrol engine to charge a battery back which powers the wheels through an electric motor. It’s unclear yet whether Mazda is using lithium-ion battery technology.
Insiders are saying that an MPV prototype us currently under development using a rotary engine. Executives are said to be very enthusiastic about the project and look forward to put it into production.
No dates have been discussed as of yet but in the meantime Mazda will be incorporating other fuel-efficient technologies in its models like the start/stop system.
