Hyundai has sold more than 800 2009 Genesis sedan models in the U.S. so far. However, Hyundai isn’t surprised at how many Genesis units it sold in its first month – the Korean automaker is shocked at who purchased one. According to Michael Deitz, manager of product of development for Hyundai, GM and Toyota were first in line to buy the Genesis and paid sticker price.

Deitz said he expects both to return since Hyundai only had the V6 models available at the time. The 375-hp 4.6L V8 Tau has yet to hit dealerships.

Deitz said that the man from GM who bought the Genesis identified himself as an employee of GM’s “Competitive Intelligence Dept.”
