Hyundai is coming close to making a decision to offer a small car that fits between the Smart ForTwo and the Honda Fit in the U.S. Insiders are saying the the Hyundai i10, currently produced in India, would be marketed in the U.S. under the Hyundai or Kia or both badges.

The five-door-hatchback gets 56mpg and is 21 inches shorter than the Fit and 34 inches longer than the Smart ForTwo.

Sources say that Hyundai will put 400 pounds or more into the car to help it meet U.S. safety standards.

The i10 is currently offered in India with a 1.2L unit producing 80-hp or a 1.1L unit producing 66-hp.
