BMW has previously said that there will be no M version of the X5 and the prototypes you’ve been seeing around the Nurburgring is nothing more than an X5 with the 400-hp 4.8 twin-turbo V8 from the X6 xDrive50i. However, BMW M GmbH’s boss Ludwig Willisch recently had a sit with Auto Motor und Sport and said that BMW is working on ‘M’ versions of both the X5 and the X6.

Willisch said that ‘M’ prototype of the X5 and X6 are both in existence and are testing at the Nurburgring Nordschleife. He said that BMW M GmbH plans to complete both models by the end of 2009 and have them on the roads shortly after.

When asked if BMW M GmbH will ever consider diesel, Willisch said ”in medium term, there is no such intention.”

I think it's a useless idea. The ONLY possible justification of this probably-over-a-$100k, well-over-2-ton, M-SUV thing, for me, is...... actually I can't find any.

I was gonna say if M-division somehow comes up with a better front end styling to replace that ugly batman mask... but still not worth it.
