The next-generation Mazda3 sedan and hatch are in the works and will have looks influenced by the new good-looking 2009 Mazda6. Based on the European Ford Focus platform and chassis expertise from the MX-5, the next-generation Mazda3 will also deliver refined performance.

Engine choices will come from Ford with petrol engines ranging from 1.4 to 2.0 liters and diesels ranging from 1.6 to 2.2 liters. As for you MPS fans, the new MazdaSpeed3 will get the 5-cylinder turbo from the Focus ST producing 250-hp. According to sources, the model will ditch its simple looks for a more aggressive design than the standard Mazda3.

Of course, fuel-efficieny will be a big part of the redesign. The next-generation Mazda3 will be lighter and is expected to use biodegradable materials.

Wait Wait Wait.... doesn't the current MazdaSpeed3 have 263 hp? And I thought a 2.5L engine with a six speed manual and automatic were in the works?

Ford already has a few 6 speeds in its parts bin, and new engine development should be a constant expense, not just a once in every great while rushed expense.

@ Jacob: the "simple" looks of the 3? Simple by what standards? All in all I like the new 3 styling better than current styling, it looks sort of Opel Insignia-ish, yet I'd never mistake it for anything but a Mazda.

I like it but I wonder if other current Mazda3 buyers will like the radical changes.

Oh gawd! The simple looks the 3 has now are great and they're not weird like the Civics.. I know this is a concept, however, it looks like a bad Malibu rendition..

I wonder if this will prompt Honda to put a turbo in the Civic Si.
