On June 27th, GM development engineer Jim Mero took the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 around the Nurburgring in 7:26.4 – beating the Nissan GT-R’s 7:29 lap. As we were promised, GM has realeased a video of the Corvette ZR1’s Nurburgring lap (you can watch it after the jump).

The 2009 Corvette ZR1 driven by Mero was all stock according to GMNext. However, some may disagree - but we’ll leave it up to you to debate the sudden urge to flaunt Nurburgring laptimes.

The $103,300 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is powered by a LS9 supercharged 6.2L V8 engine producing 638-hp, giving it the ability to go from 0-60 in 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 205mph.

That's how you drive a car. I saw one obvious error. Pretty impressive stuff.

Looks like they didn't even finish the lap. Look at the start of the video and the end, while watching the timer. Something smells fishy.

Sure! almost any car can do it, especially when you are cheating like using racing fuel, shaving off the tires only stuff that were supposed to be used on racing cars.

So at the end of the day this does nothing for GM, even if it were done with every day fuel, I still would not pick that thing over a bimmer or Benzo. Not even the new Challanger.

then you;re an idiot... No Benzo or Bimmer will come close to the track times of the ZR1, the GTR, the LF-A or the NSX.. Sports cars and luxury cars are two different things, what the hell did you mention the challenger for? Mention the CTS-V if you want to use any american sedan with a decent time on the ring.

At the end of the day, the corvette, out performed what many many people imagined it wouldn't , the GTR. However with over 600 bhp and rear wheel drive, it would be hard to see that corvette hit those time on a consecutive runs...

And at the end of the day, the two real competitors in this segment, are the NSX and the LF-A.. the corvette will be the american leade for a while, but the battle of Japan is where the real information will come from. The GTR is just an intro to what Japan can do in the supercar category.

So why did they just pull up the video now instead of before?
