It is probably more wise to try and make money at the rate that GM is burning through cash. GM already has halo cars like the Corvette. I understand that the Volt is going for a different image and they should go ahead and make it, but the reality is GM should not hedge its survival on the Volt. Making for decent car that are desirable will go farther, like the new Malibu

I agree that they most likely wont make money up front on the volt but you would be amazed at how many companies don’t make money on some products in order to build up their image.

… Take the classic Toyota supra. Toyota wasn’t making money on their sales but realized that the car benefited the company as a whole and that keeping it in production while taking a loss on each was still beneficial to the company. Think of it as more of a marketing or advertising campaign

I agree with you. They will never make any return on this car.

Everyone will still want their pregnant jellybean…err…Prius at $10,000 less.

There is a very good chance based on GM history that they will never make money on the Volt. Probably best to not bet GM future on the success of the Volt. If GM could not make money on the Chevette that was made over 10 years on the same platform, then they most likely will not make money on the technology laden Volt.
