In effort to expand its subcompact lineup, Toyota announced today that its five-door Yaris model will be available in the U.S. starting the 2009 model year. The five-door Yaris has been available in other markets since the Yaris made its debut, but the U.S. only saw the three-door hatch and the four-door sedan.

Size wise the five-door Yaris is not that different than the three-door or four-door, but should offer you some more room in the little bugger when you need the backseat. Toyota has also added standard front side and rear side airbags for the 2009 model year of the Yaris.

Powertrain range for the 2009 five-door Yaris is expected to be the same as the other variants. Pricing will be announced closer to launch date.

This is in response to the Honda Fit and how Honda cannot keep the Fit in stock because they sell so well.
