So at the end of last month we heard reports that BMW M1 Hommage Concept is headed towards production. Other recent reports suggested that the concept has already been green-lighted by the men in black at the top as a rival to the Audi R8.

According to Automobile (in the June 2008 issue), who attended the unveiling of the M1 Hommage concept at the Concorso d”Eleganza 2008 di Villa d”Este, BMW Board Member Herbert Diess said that the M1 Hommage is a ready-to-enter production concept.

“Like every BMW concept car, the M1 Hommage is backed by a solid “˜what if we had built it scenario”,” said Diess.

The BMW M1 Hommage sits on a 106.3 inch wheelbase. That beats Audi”s R8 by 2.0 inches and the Ferrari f430 by 3.9 inches. As Automobile points out those proportions are a little too extreme for the M1 Hommage to just be a plain old concept car or “˜design study” as BMW would put it.

As you know, the BMW M1 Hommage concept had no interior or engine. The concept was shown with working headlamps, tail-lamps and a steering. Insiders at Munich say that the M1 would have to better than the Audi R8 and Porsche 911 in terms of weight, engineering and appearance for BMW to be proud of it. Of course fuel-efficiency and reduces CO2 emissions will also need to be focused on.

“Efficient dynamics and the M1 Hommage theme must complement each other,” said one insider.
What”s going to reside under the hood? Insiders say that the M1 Hommage is capable packing anything from a turbocharged 4-cylinder, to a straight six, to BMW”s V8 in the M3 and even a V12. However, the 3.0L 6-cylinder twin-turbo or the turbocharged V8u seem to be the most credible say insider.

We’ll find out soon enough if the M1 Hommage will become a reality, until than we’re looking forward to the BMW GINA Visionary Model Concept set to be revealed tomorrow.

    Dear BMW,

    No.

Oh wow, I am much more impressed seeing these photos than previously, although not sure why. This is a very sharp looking car. It would have to be in very low volumes and if BMW thinks they can pull it off, I say go for it. It will honor BMW's history, but also look forward and address competition.

Why the heck not this car is beautifull and if they can deliver an R8 competitor it would be amazing.
