Mazda is extending the warrant on its rotary engine for the RX-8 to eight years and 100,000 miles. The warrant takes effect on the 2009 model and is retroactive for the 2004-2008 model years.

The warranty covers the rotary engine core, rotary housing and internal parts, and the internal seals and gaskets. Mazda also said that owners who have repaired their engine in the stated extended coverage period can make a claim for reimbursement. Owners have been complaining that the rotary engine is prone to coolant seal failures and sudden power drop-offs.

The 2009 Mazda RX-8 is available now in either a 232-horsepower model fitted with a 6-speed manual transmission, or a 212-horsepower model fitted with a 6-speed Sport A/T automatic.

I have an 04 RX8 and just bought it. I just had my CEL come on and when i looked at my fluids in the car, my oil had water condensation buildup on it and my coolant level is near empty and left the dealership fully serviced 1 month ago. It only has 64k miles. I called the dealership near me and they had no problem getting me in and fixing the problem.

Scarey. I still like the rotary engine concept and wish it was more popular.
