Our friends from Fast Lane Daily are back from Death Valley (showing us the Jaguar XF-R earlier today), and happened to spot a Mazda2 Sedan undergoing some hot-weather testing. Previously Mazda wasn’t to keen on bringing the Mazda2 to the U.S., but now with fuel-prices these spy shots may be a major indication that Mazda is reconsidering the decision.

The Mazda2 Sedan is currently available in China with a choice of three gasoline engines including a two 1.3 liter producing 75-hp and 84-hp and a 1.5-liter with an producing 103-hp. We would expect the 84-hp and 103-hp to make it to the stateside.

Since the Mazda2 Sedan is already out in China, we would expect Mazda to introduce the car sometime next year. No word on whether Mazda will bring the hatchback version to the U.S., but now that Ford has announced the Fiesta hatchback for the stateside, we highly down Mazda won’t go the same route.

This is a good move for Mazda. I also agree that the hatch version will probably arrive as well, especially after the success of the Mazda3. The Mazda2 will give momentum to an already impressive brand.
