As fuel-prices keep going up, consumers are shifting their interest from buying gas-guzzling SUVs to small and compact fuel-efficient vehicles. But while every automaker out there is claiming their small cars get the best gas mileage around, which is really the best?

Check out this awesome comparison from InsideLine of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta TDI, 2008 Ford Focus, 2008 Smart ForTwo and of course the 2008 Toyota Prius hybrid. InsideLine put the cars through five rounds of testing through three distinctly different driving routes to highlight the strengths of each car.

    I think the Jetta Sportwagen will be the first stateside piece of fruit off of that TDI tree that we see so little of.
