Fisker says that it has already sold 99 units of its upcoming Fisker Karma hybrid, deliveries of which will begin in the fourth-quarter of 2009. Fisker will only produce 15,000 units of the Karma with pricing to start at $80,000.

When Fisker unveiled the Karma at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, it never said anything about the powertrain. All we were told is that the Q-Drive plug-in hybrid technology allows the Fisker Karma to drive the first 50 miles on battery alone. We were also told that the car does 0-60 in 5.8 seconds.

Now the good guys over at AutoCar have gathered up some more info on the much anticipated $80,000 hybrid from Fisker while it was testing in California. Power is expected to come from a 1.4 liter four-cylinder engine which will act as a generator giving it the ability to do a range of 300 miles.

Fisker is also working on a hybrid version of the car, of which we so a sneak peek at the recent J.D. Power Roundtable in San Francisco.

this car will be the future. i have to say the karma is one car i really really wish i could afford. it's beautiful and it's a hybrid and it's american to boot! the technology under the hood is what a hybrid should be, primarily a electric motor with the gas engine there to charge the battery not to mention this car's no slouch! 0-60 in under 6 seconds is fast! it's too bad it's going to cost over $80,000

we actually have a full 2 page article with 35-40 images so if you guys would like to read more on the Karma i've tagged a link below, and we also dedicated a good 20 minutes to it in episode 5 of our podcast last friday.

back to the issue at hand, i do really think that this kind of hybrid technology is where we need to go in the future. we need to move to having the electric motor as the primary power for the drive train and the gasoline powered motor as the secondary. the karma proves that concept is possible, and that it's possible to put all that cool tech in a really spiffy wrapper!
