FoMoCo said today that sales of its most profitable segments, pickups and SUVs, fell sharply in April. Blaming higher-fuel prices, Ford said that SUV sales fell 36 percent in April while pickups declined 19 percent.

Ford overall April sales fell 12.1 percent in April to 200,007 as compared to 228,623 in April 2007.

Recently sold Jaguar was the only Ford brand that reported sales gain in April. With the help of the new Jaguar XF, the British automaker which will now be owned by Tata Motors, reported a 25.4 percent gain with 1,785 units sold.

The new 2008 Ford Focus stole the spotlight with a 43.5 percent increase for a total of 23,850 units sold.
