Product designer Hanyoung Lee has come up with something practical to replace our traffic lights of today. The Virtual Wall from Lee is basically a plasma laser barrier that highlights crosswalks on which pedestrians cross the street. And don’t worry, the lasers are not powerful enough to harm cars or people.

Cost of development? Supposedly a concept called ‘adlights’ or ‘traffic ads’ will be implemented in the plasma laser barrier which will display ads to those waiting at the red light. Seems like you can’t get away from advertisements anywhere these days.

Our concern? We just hope those at the intersection who are not waiting at a red-light will keep on driving by rather than being distracted by the huge display or the ads seen in the barrier.

Why not built a receiver into every car that would receive situations such as approaching a STOP sign, a yellow or red traffic light, a railway intersection, a school crossing, a traffic condition ahead or you name it and warn the driver of the upcoming situation inside the car? A stop sign or a pedestrian crossing will just transmit a "I am here!" monotonous broadcast while other traffic "devices" will continuously transmit their current condition such as a traffic light etc.
In the future the on board system could also apply brakes if necessary or even engage an automated driver system to avoid an accident...
