Joining the Altimas, Accords, Fusions and the Camrys, GM will now offer a 4-cylinder option for the new 2008 Chevrolet Malibu.

Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission the new 4-cylinder Malibu will produce 169-hp from a 2.4L unit version of GM’s Ecotec engine. According to Chevy man Ed Pepper, the model boosts fuel-economy by 2mpg for a total of 22/32mpg (city/highway).

The 4-cylinder Malibu will be shipped to dealers starting April 24 and will carry a sticker price of $26,545. The V6 Malibu starts at $27,745.

The Chevy Malibu has had a 4-cylinder engine with 4-speed transmission available since the launch began six months ago. What has now been added is the 4-cylinder available with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Saying the 4-cylinder option is new is misleading. The Malibu is now a mid-size segment leader with the addition of the 6-speed transmission and highest EPA rated highway fuel economy at 32 MPG.

Ah, the Malibu already had a four cylinder. This one just adds a 6 speed. And has slightly more power.
