Feeling left behind, BMW will launch its first 8-speed gearbox in the next-generation flagship 7-Series. Currently the 6-speed transmission is overshadowed by Mercedes-Benz 7-speed auto and Lexus’ 8-speed on its big arse LS.
Sources say that BMW’s 8-speed transmission will take about the same amount of space as the current 6-speed and will use no additional components. The transmission will use four planetary gear sets and five transmission clutches, two of which are unlocked per gear, resulting in a higher overall transmission ratio.
With the use of Efficient Dynamics the 8-speed will reduce consumption by almost 6 percent. According to sources the transmission can be integrated into other vehicles with ease and should be available in hybrids and future X-Drive variants.
Engine specifications for the next-generation 7-series are expected to range from a 3.0 liter engine producing up to 272-hp to a new S65 V8 engine producing 414 horsepower. The 4.4L V8 found in the new X6 SAV that produces 400-hp will also join the lineup.
