At a meeting with analysts this month in Munich, BMW’s CEO Norbert Reithofer was outspoken about his desire to partner with rival Mercedes-Benz.
Reithofer feels that premium European automakers should team up to fight the effects of a weak dollar and since BMW and Mercedes-Benz have plants in the Southeast, he feels it would only make sense for the two to partner up and work with U.S. parts suppliers.
“We talked to Daimler and asked them, ‘Why don’t we do some things together?'” Reithofer said.
Daimler is not too excited about the PDA and feels it may be too soon for the two German automakers to be seen in public holding hands. “We are not commenting on Mr. Reithofer’s statements,” Florian Martens, spokesman for Mercedes-Benz Cars said.
