GM considers a Pontiac G8 Coupe variant

Pontiac considers a G8 Coupe variant

Pontiac showed its new Pontiac G8 GXP at the 2008 New York Auto Show. GM is now considering to expand the GXP offering with a rear-wheel-drive G8 Coupe. Based on the Holden Coupe 60 concept, the coupe should arrive in showrooms within the next three years.

Power will come from the same a 6.2 liter V8 small-block that produces 402-hp and 402 lb-ft of torque. It is also expected to be mated to the same Hydra-Matic 6-speed 6L80 automatic transmission with an optional 6-speed Tremec TR6060 manual.

The G8 Coupe is not dead,” said one source within the company. “This is an uphill battle. It shouldn’t be. But it is.” InsideLine sources indicate that the chance of getting the coupe is probably less than 50 percent.

Don’t expect the Firebird or the GTO name to be revived for the Pontiac lineup. The G8 Coupe will go head-to-head with the Mustang GT500KR, Dodge Challenger SRT8 and the upcoming Camaro SS. The coupe is also expected to be offered in a GT variant.
