Usually, owners of the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord or even the Nissan Maxima won’t even look at domestic brands when shopping for a mid-sized sedan. Well that’s all changing and the redesigned Chevrolet Malibu is attracting more cross-shopping with Japanese models.

According to J.D. Power and Associates, both Nissan and Toyota were among the 10 most frequently traded brands for buyers of the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu.

“You don’t generally see that with mainline domestic brands,” said Tom Libby, the network’s senior director of industry analysis. “I made a note to myself to watch this.”

Buyers are even paying $5,000 more on average for the new Malibu compared to the outgoing model. The average transaction price for the 2008 Malibu was $22,233 in December through February. For the 2007 model that number was $17,577.

I used to buy american cars, not any longer, My last nissan has 218,000 miles on it, and still runs good.

Just bought a 2009 Toyota Corolla. Love it. Now it is about price and quality. American cars simply can’t compete with the quality of these vehicles.
