Lutz on the ‘El Camino’ nameplate: I personally like the name

Yeah Jalopnik, WardsAutos.com is calling you guys ‘El Camino loyalists.’ Our friends at Jalopnik roamed the halls of the 2008 New York Auto Show sporting ‘Vote for El Camino’ badges and handed them out to the press to show strong support for the upcoming and unnamed Pontiac sport truck.

If you’re not up-to-date on your Pontiac news, GM unveiled Pontiac sports truck at the 2008 New York Auto Show and is asking the American public to help name the car.

“I personally like the name,” GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said when asked if “El Camino” has a chance. “It would have instant recognition. It”s a good name. It was always a good name.”

However Lutz understands that the internal beef it might cause by naming a Pontiac product by a name once carried by Chevrolet. “It might put the Chevrolet division at odds with the Pontiac division and cause a little internal grief,” he says.

Lutz said that GM originally considered the car for the Chevrolet lineup but then decided Chevy was having too much fun with their wide range of products. GM felt it was more logical to have it as a part of the G8 lineup. We couldn’t agree more.
