BMW announces Project i unit, fourth brand being considered

BMW announced today that it has set up a new unit named Project i to produce minicars. CEO Norbert Reithofer said that Project i will focus on dealing with strict emissions requirements and restricted access to towns and cities. Reithofer said that a fourth brand could be a possibility but no final decision has been taken as of yet.

“First of all, we must define what type of vehicles we will produce then we will ask the question if those concepts fit better with the BMW brand, the Mini brand or a sub brand within those two. If none of these options are possible then perhaps we will have a fourth brand,” Reithofer said.

Reithofer said that Project i will be ready to present solutions by the early half of the next decade.

Speaking in an interview with Auto Motor und Sport last week, Reithofer said that BMW will decide on an electric car for the U.S. market this year.
