According to a Ford engineer, design work is well under way on the Lincoln MKT crossover but no final decision has been made as of yet whether to give the green-light to the program known internally as D472. The Lincoln MKT is based on the same architecture as the Ford Flex, however, both bear no resemblance to each other.
FoMoCo has told The Detroit News, that a production prototype was shown to a consumer panel on Saturday to figure out where to position the MKT in the market.
“We’re showing it in front of customers,” Ford spokesman Mark Schirmer said. “The company is actively pursuing a luxury crossover for Lincoln.”
A dealer source also said that Ford sent out a letter saying that the company plans on killing the Mark LT pickup for Lincoln at the end of this model year. Ford confirmed the letter saying that will eliminate the pickup in order to make room for the Platinum Edition of the Ford F-150, which was shown along side the MKT concept in Detroit.
Both moves will realign the Lincoln brand, making it a serious luxury brand in the U.S. and global markets.
