GM to road test Volt’s lithium-ion batteries in July

So next week we’ll be bringing you live coverage of the 2008 New York Auto Show. While looking at our press conferences schedule sheet we saw a special event dedicated entirely to the ‘GM-Volt.’ Now we’re not sure exactly what GM has in store for us but we’ll let you know on Wednesday. Anyway, our main man Bob Lutz announced today that GM will begin testing lithium-ion battery packs for the Volt beginning this July.

In an interview with Reuters, Lutz said that GM may not name the battery supplier for the Volt’s next-generation lithium-ion hybrid system until the second half of 2008.

“We were hoping to do that in the first half,” said Lutz. “That may also be a little bit longer now, as we need a better handle on who has the technological capability we need and who is going to have the production capability.”
