We already know that the Audi A5 convertible will be making its debut in January 2009 courtesy of a leaked internal product launch document. In a recent interview with Automobilewoche, Audi’s product head Frank Dreves said that the A5 will see production later this year in Neckarsulm, a city in northern Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, near Stuttgart.

The A5 convertible will go on sale next year going head-to-head with the BMW 328i convertible. The A5 convertible is expected to be followed by the Audi S5 convertible that will compete with the BMW 335i convertible. Unlike the 3-Series convertibles, the Audi A5 and S5 convertibles will have an electric soft-tops to keep the weight down.

The A5 convertible is expected to be powered by the same 3.2 liter FSI V6 unit plus the two 2.7 liter and 3.0 liter TDI diesels for the European market.

Dreves said that Audi plans on building a total of 28,000 A5 convertibles in the first year of production. We expect to see a Detroit Auto Show debut in January 2009.

I don't understand why the A4 convertible doesn't compete with the BMW 328i and the S4 convertible doesn't with the BMW 335i.
