U.S. to get a Mazda MX-5 coupe in 2010?

Word on the street is that the U.S. could be getting a Mazda MX-5 coupe variant in the near future. The fixed-roof MX-5 was previously available in Japan and due to a lower price point than the convertible, the MX-5 coupe could be a good addition to Mazda’s U.S. lineup.

While Mazda is pretty quiet about the matter, rumor has it that the coupe MX-5 could arrive in U.S. showrooms as early as 2010 along with a facelift to the model.

We’re not sure if this rumor will ever come true since the MX-5 already has a hardtop instead of the old ragtop on the Miata. It just wouldn’t make sense to offer a fixed-roof model.

Oh, it would DEFINITELY make sense to offer a fixed roof version as well. I have 2 words for why: Club Racing. A fixed roof version, in addition to being offered at lower cost, would yield higher torsional rigidity and lower weight. And these days, every pound counts. And the styling could get a little more sports car like, and a little less fem.

Agreed with Kap, and I also have to say, a slight engine upgrade to go along with it and the MX-5 will find new customers.
