Ford will begin offering a new feature alongside its Sync service called SmartAlert. Similar to GM’s OnStar service, SmartAlert will offer a wireless tracking service that will help police recover stolen vehicles and can unlock your doors when you get locked out.

Ford and Lincoln/Mercury dealerships will begin offering the SmartAlert service in partnership with SkyWay Systems Inc. Installation, hardware and the first year of service will cost $700 to $1,200.

Oh and if you’re a teenager looking to buy a Ford, beware because parents of teen drivers can set up alerts by cell phone, e-mail or text message to see if you’re traveling at excessive speeds.
