At to the 2008 Chicago Auto Show today, John Krafcik, Hyundai’s vice president of product development, said that he expects 20 percent of buyers to choose the 4.6 liter V8 version of the upcoming Hyundai Genesis. Krafcik said that while cylinder deactivation technology or gasoline direct injection won’t be available at launch, those features could be added later.

Hyundai engineers have designed the 4.6 liter V8 to accept those fuel-saving technologies as well as a supercharger, for added performance. Krafcik said Hyundai is expecting the Genesis to elevate the auto maker’s engineering image and status.

“The benchmark cars were the BMW 5 series, Mercedes-Benz E class and Lexus GS,” he says.

Hyundai expects the Genesis to appeal to value-conscious, performance-oriented drivers who don’t want to pay thousands extra for a prestige badge.

Despite all the claims, I have my doubts this will be anywhere near as good as a 5 series, E Class, or even the GS.

But its going to knock the socks off the G8, which even with a cheap V8 is overpriced as in its segment everyone else offers wood and leather. The Avalon has wood and leather, the Azera has wood and leather, and now the only competitor in in its class also offers wood and leather.

The standard car of today is what we considered a luxury car 7 years ago. Todays luxury is everything from then with technology, sportiness, and style. The Genesis argueably will have some sportiness, and style is personal preference but high style is still set by Mercedes Benz and Audi. BMW has kinda fallen there (thank you Bangle), but all three take crowns in the all three categories.

As to direct injection and a supercharger, I’m surprised that it does not already have direct injection. I can only imagine how much more power would be delivered via a new injection system.
