AMG close to adding diesel model to lineup

AMG considering adding diesel to its lineup

Oh the things the CAFE 35 regulations are making auto makers do (but really, it’s not all that bad). Following Audi after it unveiled its R8 V12 TDI Concept at the Detroit Motor Show and as Ferrari flaunted its 430 BioFuel Spyder, Mercedes bosses are now considering or already in the process of going diesel.

AutoExpress says that the can officially reveal that Mercedes’ high-performance division, AMG, is ‘closer than ever to launching an AMG-badged diesel model.’

What will we see? Well sources are saying that a powerful V8 diesel engine is likely that will create more than 516 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes is keeping its mouth shut on which model will get the diesel treatment, but did say that besides the revised SLK, five other models will be facelifted and refreshed in 2008.

If we were to guess, we’d put our money on the E 63 AMG or the CLS 63 AMG.
