When Toyota came out with the new Tundra, many doubted that an import would be able to take on the Big 3 in a segment that highly dominated by American pride. According to Motor Trend the answer is in: “The new Toyota Tundra is now ready to take on any American-made pickup truck — on all levels.”

Motor Trend Magazine has named the new Toyota Tundra its Truck of the Year for 2008. The truck went head-to-head with competitors including the Chevrolet Silverado HD, the GMC Sierra HD and the Ford F-250, 350 and 450 Super Duty. All trucks were tested at a Ford proving ground in Arizona where tests included trailer towing and driving performance on rough roads.

Toyota just started offering an entry level Tundra which is powered by a 4.0 liter DOHC 24V V6 that produces 236 horsepower. Buyers may also opt for the 4.7 liter V8 that produces 276 horsepower or the 5.7 liter V8 that produces 381 horsepower.

The 2008 Toyota Tundra is available in three different variants including a Regular Cab, a Double Cab and CrewMax.
