It’s nothing new getting zapped getting out of your car in the winter as the dry cold air can lead to electrostatic discharge.  However on 550i, 650i and X5 models equipped BMW’s V8, that same electrostatic discharge has been known to occur at the pipes that feed fuel to the injectors resulting in a malfunction in the Electronic Control Unit or ECU, subsequently causing the motor to stall. 

Dealers will install grounds in the engine compartment to fix this problem. ’

Next time you get zapped getting out of your car, just be happy it wasn’t your engine getting zapped.
