Sales of small SUVs in Europe have grown dramatically over the past two years. Currently, Toyota leads in Europe”s medium SUV segment with its RAV4, which has been the top-selling mid-size SUV since 2001. But that’s not enough; Toyota now wants to dominate the small SUV segment.
The Japanese automaker is planning a five-door small SUV that will be based on the Toyota Ist, or on our side of the world, the Scion xD. Toyota hopes to unveil the car at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show in March and hopes to bring it to European dealerships shortly after.
“Toyota will import from Japan a heavily rebodied variant of the Ist,” Thierry Dombreval, chief operating officer of Toyota Motor Europe, told Automotive News Europe.
Dombreval says that the European version will look more aggressive than its Japanese version. He says it will more likely look like the Urban Cruiser concept shown at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show.
