Lexus IS-F sets precedent for future F-models, even if critics think it’s ugly

While in terms of performance the Lexus IS-F is raking up acclaim, design wise critics are saying that it’s not to different from the base IS model and that its ‘bulbous nose is downright ugly.”

However, Lexus is less concerned with tweaking the design of the Lexus IS-F and more concerned with creating future F-models which are in the pipeline and will embody the F-ness from the IS-F.

“We have to establish our own identity as a Lexus premium brand,” design chief Wahei Hira told the press at the Tokyo Motor Show. “Maybe we will put some flavor or dynamics, or more emotion, toward (F models) than the basic Lexus design.”

Hirai agrees that Lexus could be a little more aggressive with its F-models to better rival German brands but says that the Lexus brand likes to keep their design ‘L-Finesse. Supposedly the ‘L’ in Lexus stands for “the leading edge of finesse.”

Powered by a 5.0 liter V8 engine, the rear-wheel-drive Lexus IS-F produces 417 horsepower and 371 lb-ft of torque. The car is expected to make its U.S. market debut in February.
