Spy Shots: VW Scirocco hits the Nurburgring

Spies have caught the Volkswagen Scirocco undergoing high-speed testing at the Nurburgring. Reports of the Scirocco, which is largely based on the IROC concpet, coming to the U.S. have been pretty shakey.

It was once reported that Volkswagen didn’t want to bring the Scirocco over to the U.S. since it may jepordize the sales of the Golf. “The GTI is iconic — it’s as strong a name as the Beetle,” said Adrian Hallmark, boss of Volkswagen in the U.S. “It is economically suicidal for us to risk the sales volume and the potential for GTI,” said Hallmark.

That report was then countered by a Volkswagen spokesman who said Winterkorn’s decision to bring the Scirocco to the U.S. will follow the car’s debut at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show. Engine specs are expected to range from a 1.4 liter engine producing 138 horsepower and a supercharged variant producing 168. A 2.0 liter engine producing 197 horsepower is also expected.
