VW's Up! coming to the U.S. to take on Smart ForTwo

Volkswagen unveiled its new Up! concept, the first concept version of its new small rear-engine car, at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week. Well, according to Automotive News, the Volkswagen Up! city car could be headed to the United States as a competitor to the Smart ForTwo.

If the concept is approved for production, which it most likely will be, the Volkswagen Up! will be headed to the United Stated within three to four years.

Volkswagen AG Group CEO, Martin Winterkorn, said it’s the first project he starting pushing for when he took the office this year. He believes that the Up! concept represents everything he wants VW to stand for: low-priced mobility, environmental concern and technology.

While Winterkorn wouldn”t cough up any info on the production Up! concept version, he did say that the car would be likely to reach production in a couple of years. A second concept version of the Up! concept is due at the Tokyo Auto Show in October, followed by a third concept at the LA Auto Show in November.

According to Adrian Hallmark, executive vice president of Volkswagen of America, even though the concept has two doors, a four-door production version is likely, and that is what the United States would get; a perfect competitor to the Smart.

“We have already put our foot in the door and told Wolfsburg we would like to take a look at it.”
