New Think electric-car may come to the US

Mini-electric car maker Think Global said it aims to launch the second-generation City minicar in the United Stated by 2008. According to the Think’s CEO, Jan-Olaf Willums, Th!ink is establishing distribution networks in the US market for its no-emissions car.

Willums told Automotive News Europe that Norway would be first to get the City minicar followed by the rest of Scandinavia and that the company wants to be ready to launch in the other markets soon after. United Kingdom, Switzerland and the Netherlands will also get the car.

The company was originally founded December 1991 in Oslo, as Pivco. After failure to get funding for full-scale production, the company was acquired by Ford, who started production of the Think City. Production ceased in 2002, after 1005 cars had been made.

Production of the City will now begin in the fall at the carmaker’s new plant in Aurs-kog, Norway, northeast of Oslo.
