Mazda2 US plans: Mazda not to eager to fight Yaris or Fit

One of the most logical things for Ford to do would be to bring the Ford Mondeo to the US as well as the Mazda2. But why would Ford do something logical? According to Automotive News, bringing the Mazda2 to the US to compete with the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris is not a high priority for Mazda.

“As soon as North American dealers see this, they ask for it,” said Mazda President Hisakazu Imaki. “But from an overall perspective of the brand and profitability, we choose not to market it in North America.”

Instead, Ford plans to launch a Ford branded car in the US using the Mazda2 platform. That car will most likely be the Ford Fiesta, which is expected to come here in 2009.

Honestly, we’d much rather have the Mazda2 and its MPS variant. According to Nigel Brackenbury, general manager of Mazda’s global marketing division, Mazda would much rather focus on the crossover segment.
