Mitsubishi 'i' car to go electric in 2011

According to our friends over at CarMagazine, Mitsubishi’s first electric car that is slated for mid-2010 in Japan will be its ‘i’ car. The car is also expected to make its UK debut sometime in 2011. UK managing director, Jim Tyrrell, had a chance to test-drive the research vehicle recently in Japan.

The test vehicle, called the ‘i’ MIEV (Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle) is powered by an electric motor that develops 63 horsepower and 133lb ft of torque, with a top speed of 81 mph. The Mitsubishi ‘i’ MIEV has to plug-in options including a quick-charge plug that reaches 80 percent capacity in 25 minutes.

Tyrrell said the car “looks road-ready and perfect,” after spending a few mintues with it in Japan. He will campaign to bring the electric variant to the UK soon after the petrol version is launched this July.

Please bring us one to the US as well.

There are cars that would come up in European markets much earlier for example Reva, these cars are already available commercially in Indian markets and so far 600 are sold, by the time Mitsubishi releases it’s car, most of the European cars including Mercedes would be already selling their electric versions i.e in 2011, so there would be lot of options, isn’t Mitsubishi losing out on it’s sales by bringing it’s car late, unless they are having technical problems.
