According to Japanese newspaper Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, Nissan is working on developing a diesel-powered Nissan Titan truck for the United States by 2009. Nissan will be working with US truck and engine maker Navistar International Corp to develop the diesel engines for the full-size pickup truck.
Following Toyota’s lead, Nissan is hoping to take some market share in the US pickup truck market and hopes that a diesel powered full-size pickup will help it gain credibility.
Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun said that Navistar International Corp, who currently provides diesel engines to Ford for their Super Duty pickups, will be supplying Nissan with V8 diesel engines.
Nissan Titan sales are down 15 percent this year with 28,668 units sold.
The Japanese company also has plans to produce a diesel version of the Nissan Maxima sedan in the US in 2010.
