Rear-engine Volkswagen to make a comeback

Sources are saying that Volkswagen is working on a what Automobile Magazine is describing as “a rump-motored, water-cooled small car, one that mimics the original Beetle in both layout and purpose.” When developed, the rear-engined car will come in three wheelbase options and two body styles, two of which will be offered in the US and will be marketed as a cheaper Jetta aimed at the Smart ForTwo.
Pricing is expected to be between the $10,000 to $14,000 range so don’t expect too many options and features. While power steering won’t be offered due to cost-reducing measures, options like navigation and sunroof will be available.
We would definitely like to see a convertible version of this.
