Face Off Friday: Half the Price, Same Fun – Mitsubishi Evo IX vs Porsche 911 GT3

Who would’ve thought that someone would compare the power of a Porsche to a Mitsubishi? Well today’s Face off Friday does just that by putting the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX and the Porche 911 GT3 in the same sentence and comparing the abilities of both. The Porsche 911 GT3 has 415 horsepower and a MSRP of $106,000, while the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX has 280 horsepower and costs less than half, with a MSRP of $31,399. So can you have the same fun for less than half the price with the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX?

Let’s look at the Porsche 911 GT3 first. The car comes in a 3.6 liter 6-cylinder engine that produces 415 horsepower and 300 lb-ft. of torque. This gives the Porsche 911 GT3 the ability to do 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds with top speeds of 193 mph. There is no way, that Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX could beat that right?

Well you’d be surprised. With a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbo engine, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX produces 286 horsepower and 289 lb-ft. of torque. That’s 129 horsepower less than the Porsche 911 GT3. So what is the 0-60 mph time on the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX? 4.5 seconds with top speeds of 150 mph, just tailing the Porsche 911 GT3.

So there you have it. Who said German engineering couldn’t be beaten, well almost. But you can have the same fun in Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX as compared to the Porsche 911 GT3 for half the price. So now you can spend that extra $74,601 somewhere else. Maybe pick yourself up a BMW M3 when it comes out.

Update on confusion: Okay we’ve been getting emails saying this Face off Friday comparison was a bad choice because of course the Porsche would be anyone’s choice over the Evo. Guys, we never said the Evo is the optimal choice for everyone in the world. We simply said that you can have the same fun in the Evo as the Porsche. Of course, if you have the $106,000, go out and buy the Porsche, but if you want the same fun for cheaper, go for the Evo.
