See I go the other route with the Highlander, given it is geared towards a performance side of things, it also is fuel efficient. There was demand for a more powerful Highlander. Toyota did not have a V8 that would be suitable and Hybrid technology has a better rep than a V8, so they gave the customer the power of a V8 with the fuel efficiency of their I-4 models. I think from a marketing standpoint it has merit. Its marketed incorrectly to people mostly because Hybrid technology carries a preconceived notion of high MPG, but from the standpoint of a V8 coming out, getting 20 mpg and costing $4000, Toyota went with a Hybrid that get 31/27 mpg and has a ton of scoot for the $6500 premium with a cut from the feds back.

Tom, my man… Price difference vs. gas mileage is only part of the point of getting a hybrid. You have to also care about the environment, not using more fuel than is necessary, US dependence on fossil fuels, etc. I was very disappointed in Toyota’s decision to package and program the 2006 and 2007 Hybrid Highlander for performance rather than fuel efficiency. After all, the majority of hybrid buyers want them for the higher fuel efficiency I hope that decision is reversed in the new 2008 model. I am ready to buy one ASAP to keep my new Prius company.

Toyota needs to consider making a hybrid diesel for SUV’s. The toyota sienna minivan is a better deal. It can still tow 3500 pounds and gets 26 mpg highway. While the hybrid highlander gets much better city mileage, the $7000 difference in price will buy a LOT of gas.
